Vorentscheidung I: Die Fahrtrichtung
Vor dem Start zur Ostsee-Umrundung stellten sich einige grundsätzliche Fragen, zum Beispiel: In welcher Richtung möchte ich fahren? Die Entscheidung, mich im Uhrzeigersinn um die Ostsee zu bewegen, fiel recht klar und schnell aus folgenden Gründen:
• Mit Dänemark und Schweden würde ich als erstes durch Länder fahren, die mir relativ bekannt sind und auch von der Kultur und Lebensweise sehr nah. Als ich in Kiel studiert habe, war ich jedes Jahr in Dänemark und habe dort nur gute Erfahrungen gemacht. Schweden und Finnland habe ich nach dem Abitur 1973 schon einmal mit dem Auto bereist, in Schweden war ich auch schon zweimal mit dem Rad unterwegs.
Ich würde mir also das Unbekannte etwas aufsparen, wenn mich mich an die sonstigen Aspekte des Radreisens gewöhnt hatte. Außerdem braucht man für die russischen Abschnitte um Petersburg und Kaliningrad Visa, was mehr Vorbereitung und Zeit erfordert, als ich zur Verfügung hatte.
• Die Frage, aus welcher Richtung meistens der Wind weht, wird heftig diskutiert – für mich war sich nicht so entscheidend, weil ich bei einer Umrundung der Ostsee ja so oder so in jede Richtung mal fahre. Trotzdem scheint mir die vorherrschende Richtung aus Westen zu sein und mir so auch die ersten Etappen zu erleichtern.
• Der entscheidende Aspekt für mich aber ist: Ich möchte immer so dicht wie möglich am Wasser fahren – und das ist bei Rechtsverkehr nun mal die rechte Seite. Wenn ich eine Straße entlangfahre, habe ich keine Autos zwischen mir und der Küste. Und wenn sich mir ein Weg Richtung Wasser bietet, kann ich sofort abbiegen!

• With Denmark and Sweden I would first travel through countries that are relatively well known to me and also very close in terms of culture and way of life. When I studied in Kiel, I was in Denmark every year and had only good experiences there. I have already travelled Sweden and Finland by car after my high school diploma in 1973, in Sweden I have also travelled by bike twice.
So I would save the unknown a bit if I got used to the other aspects of cycling. Furthermore, visas are required for the Russian sections around Petersburg and Kaliningrad, which requires more preparation and time than I had available.
• The question from which direction the wind blows most of the time is hotly debated – for me it wasn’t that decisive, because when I circumnavigate the Baltic Sea I go in any direction one way or the other. Nevertheless, the prevailing direction from the west seems to me to be the one that makes the first stages easier for me.
• But the decisive aspect for me is: I always want to drive as close to the water as possible – and that’s the right side of the road when driving on the right. When I drive along a road, I don’t have any cars between me and the coast. And if I see a path towards the water, I can turn off immediately!
